“We want you to come, visit us, know us. We want to be your friends, your allies, your partners. But what we won’t be is your lackeys,” said El Salvadorian President Nayib Bukele.
You know what that means? Time for some good old-fashioned wanderlust activity.
Important to note, the US State Department‘s recommendation regarding El Salvador is to “Reconsider Travel.” However, they’re also congratulating Bukele on his recent victory winning 70% of the vote for his second term as President. I think the general consensus, despite a lot of nervousness and critique, is a desire to see El Salvador succeed. Do your best to stay away from illegal activity, specifically involving drugs or human trafficking or anything else Bukele’s government is targeting.
That being said… if you’re riding the Equator, and happen to make a stop in the Land of Hammocks, you can now purchase raw milk using crypto currency in El Salvador.
Bitcoin at the farmers market
One hour south of the nation’s capital, San Salvador, along the southern-facing stretch of the American west coast rests a new tourist development referred to as Surf City.
Since bitcoin was made an official currency by Bukele’s government, grocers and retailers across the country accept bitcoin in exchange for their products. This includes raw milk and other artisan goods available at farmers markets.
On Instagram, the Bitcoin Farmers Market shows a variety of vendors in attendance, including raw dairy, in an advertisement for their Sunday market:
