Image is from Montana, a destination that Canadians can visit to get raw milk currently.
Two thirds of the towns and counties in the Municipal District of Greenview voted in favor of on-farm raw milk sales. The resolution compels the RMA to lobby the Canadian federal government to amend its food regulations and allow the sale of raw dairy under certain conditions.
Currently, the market for raw milk in Canada is underground, composed of word-of-mouth private membership associations.
Canadian federal law currently prohibits raw milk sales. Legalizing on-farm raw milk in the country would create a regulatory system similar to many jurisdictions in The USA and Europe.
“There’s an incredible amount of black-farm activity, which is an unsafe way to do it,” said Sturgeon County Councillor Matthew McLennan.
The motion reads:
While the risk of contamination in raw milk is real, modern food safety practices such as closed milking systems, refrigeration, regular microbial testing, and sanitary inspections have evolved significantly, Several international jurisdictions, including parts of the European Union, permit the sale of raw milk through regulatory frameworks that require producer registration, temperature controls, labelling, testing, and traceability.
