What is raw milk?

Milk is a raw material that comes from the mammary glands of cows, goats, sheep, camels, alpacas, or any other mammal.

Raw milk has not been treated or subjected to boiling, pasteurization, homogenization, UV radiation, high-pressure processing, or any other process meant to alter its composition.

Raw milk is milked, filtered, cooled, bottled, and sold direct-to-consumer, customers, cheese makers, or retailers.

When you choose raw milk, you are supporting farmers directly - instead of corporate milk processors.

How to find raw milk

There are filtered maps for raw cow milk, A2 raw cow milk, all raw milk with A2 protein, raw goat milk, raw sheep milk, raw donkey milk, raw buffalo milk and raw camel milk.

Is raw milk legal?

If you are in the USA, raw milk sales are permitted or not permitted on the state level. Consuming raw milk is not illegal anywhere.

Some states welcome raw milk sales in grocery stores, usually found in the natural food section. Other jurisdictions require herdshare membership to distribute raw milk. Few examples:

In California, raw milk is widely available in grocery stores. Kentucky requires a note from your physician to purchase raw goat milk. Florida requires raw milk to be sold through feed licensing as "pet food." Australian raw milk can only be sold as a cosmetic ie "bath milk." In England, and many places across Europe, raw milk is dispensed through vending machines (bring your own refillable container).

Is raw milk safe?

More than 10m people consume raw milk in the United States. Per consumer, 1 in 14,250 (or 0.007%) raw milk consumers get sick with anything as mild as a stomach ache, compared to 1 in 145 (or 0.69%) for leafy greens. 1 in 500,000 (or 0.0002%) are hospitalized. All food comes with risk, raw milk is no different. Risk can also be mitigated. Milking into a bucket and drinking it unfiltered is a thing that happens in many places. Raw milk production for retail is an operation that farmers take seriously. Clean facilities, equipment, and procedures are highly recommended.
