How to Find a Raw Milk Vending Machine in Europe: A Practical Guide
A raw milk vending machine is a refrigerated, self-service dispenser supplying unpasteurized milk from a single named farm, typically restocked within 24 hours of milking. Machines are found across much of Europe, with Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Switzerland, and Austria all operating networks of varying scale. What varies is the regulatory framework, the terminology, and where to look.

What to Bring and Expect
Container
Most machines require you to supply your own bottle or jar. Glass is preferred in Italy, where dispensing into single-use containers is discouraged; reusable bottles work everywhere. Some machines sell glass bottles on-site for a small deposit. Bring a bottle that can be sealed and refrigerated immediately.
Payment
The standard format is coin-operated. Some machines in France accept rechargeable loyalty cards. Card payment is increasingly available in the Netherlands and Germany but not universal. Carrying coins in €0.50 and €1 denominations covers most machines.
Price
Individual farmers set their own rates; prices vary by country, operator, and season. Most European raw milk machines fall in the range of €1.00 to €1.50 per liter, with Switzerland somewhat higher in CHF terms. Most machines dispense in 10cl increments and accept fractional purchases. Current pricing for individual sources is listed on each directory entry where available.
Hours
Fully automated machines (the DF Italia, Brunimat, and similar formats) typically operate 24 hours. Farm shop setups in Switzerland, Austria, and Germany usually follow farm hours. Check before making a dedicated trip.
Freshness and Shelf Life
Machines are restocked daily. In Italy and France, the legal maximum is 24 hours before unsold milk must be removed from the machine; in Slovenia, the same standard applies in practice. Packaged raw milk purchased from a retail source typically carries a J+3 shelf life (three days from the milking date). Refrigerate immediately and keep at or below 4°C.
Italy
Italy operates one of the largest raw milk vending machine networks in Europe under the national framework established by the Intesa Stato-Regioni of January 25, 2007. Machines are called distributori di latte crudo and dispense by the liter, with fractional purchases in 10cl increments common. They are concentrated in northern Italy, including Bologna, Milan, Venice, Turin, Bergamo, and Brescia, and are also present throughout central and southern Italy, Sicily, and Sardinia. Machines must display the warning “prodotto da consumarsi solo dopo bollitura” in red text (minimum 4cm height).
To find machines, Coldiretti’s provincial portals list local distributori by region. Find current sources at raw milk in Italy. Italian search terms: distributore di latte crudo, latte crudo vicino a me. Full regulatory and equipment detail is in Italy’s Raw Milk Vending Machines: The Distributori di Latte Crudo.
France
French raw milk vending machines (distributeurs automatiques de lait cru, fontaines à lait) are authorized under the Arrêté du 13 juillet 2012 with no restriction on distance from the producing farm. Some machines offer rechargeable loyalty cards that reduce the per-liter cost. No aggregate national machine count has been published by any government or industry body.
Packaged raw milk (lait cru) is also available in specialist and organic grocery stores across France, including Biocoop outlets nationally. Slovenia
Slovenian mlekomati (singular: mlekomat) operate 24 hours at markets, petrol stations, and public locations. Three are currently active in Ljubljana: Mlekomat Tržnica, Mlekomat Šmartinska c. 45, and Mlekomat Dolnice. Each machine is attributed to a single farm and accepts both brought containers and on-site bottles.

Switzerland and Austria
Swiss machines (Milchautomat) operate at farm gates and in farm shops (Hofläden). Austrian machines (Milchautomat, Rohmilchautomat) are regulated by AGES and must carry the label “Raw milk, boil before consumption.”

Netherlands
Dutch raw milk dispensers are called melktaps (milk taps) and are widespread at farms near villages and on the outskirts of towns. From January 2025, producers must test monthly for salmonella, campylobacter, and STEC (Netherlands begins monthly testing of raw milk). Consumers typically bring reusable glass bottles; farms may sell cheese and other dairy products at the same location. Access is generally 24/7 at farm gate installations.

Germany
Germany operates two parallel systems. Farm-gate raw milk machines (Milchautomat, Milchtankstelle) dispense unpackaged raw milk that must come from the current or previous day’s production and must carry the label “Rohmilch, vor dem Verzehr abkochen” (Raw milk, boil before consumption). These are concentrated in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. A separate category, Vorzugsmilch (certified raw milk), is packaged and may be sold in retail stores; the farms producing it face monthly local veterinary inspections covering bacterial counts, udder health, Campylobacter, Salmonella, Listeria, and E. coli. The license is deliberately limited in number and the count of approved farms changes over time (BfR / German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment).

England and Wales
Raw drinking milk is legal in England and Wales, sold only from registered farms directly to consumers. Unlike the continental dispenser model, UK raw milk is predominantly sold in sealed glass or plastic bottles at the farm gate, farm shop, or via home delivery rounds. Permitted channels include farm gate sales, on-farm vending machines, farmers’ markets (by the producer), and farm delivery rounds. Off-farm vending machines remain in a legally uncertain position: the Food Standards Agency dropped a prosecution against Sussex producer Steve Hook for a machine at Selfridges, but current FSA guidance confines clearly permitted sales to farm premises and farmers’ markets. Sales of raw drinking milk are completely banned in Scotland.
Required label: “This milk has not been heat treated and may contain organisms harmful to health.” Farms are inspected twice yearly by FSA dairy hygiene inspectors. The Raw Milk Producers Association, established March 4, 2019, represents registered producers. Find current sources at raw milk in the UK.
Countries With No Raw Milk Machines
Scotland: The sale of raw drinking milk has been banned since 1983. Raw milk cheeses made outside Scotland and aged sufficiently to reduce pathogen risk are still available in Scottish retailers.
Spain: Raw milk sales have been banned nationally since 1990. In Catalonia, sales were legalized in 2018 and farm-gate and direct-sale access is available there. Raw milk cheeses are widely available across Spain regardless of region.
Norway: Farm milk dispensers exist but dispense pasteurized milk only. Raw milk for direct human consumption is not permitted.
