Description
Utah's Redmond Real Salt company grew this raw dairy from an employee milk-share into farm stores across Salt Lake City, Orem, and Heber City.
From salt mine to dairy farm
Redmond Heritage Farms began as an employee perk at Redmond Inc., the Utah company that mines Redmond Real Salt. CEO Rhett Roberts started bringing in shipments of raw, whole foods for his staff; demand grew until someone bought a cow to supply fresh raw milk, and the informal food-share eventually became a licensed dairy. The herd now grazes on pastureland above the same mineral deposits Redmond has mined for decades, and the cows' mineral supplement is Redmond's own salt and clay.
Growing into a farm store chain
The first retail location, then called Real Foods, opened in Orem in 2003. Until 2026, Utah law only permitted the owner of a dairy cow to sell its milk raw through a store the producer majority-owned, which is why Redmond built out its own retail chain rather than selling through other grocers. That changed with HB179, a March 2026 state law that opened raw milk retail to any state-inspected store, though Redmond continues to sell primarily through its own locations. The chain later rebranded to Redmond Heritage Farms Store and expanded into Salt Lake City and Heber City, adding farm-to-table cafes alongside the retail cases. A traveling milk truck launched in 2018 to extend the farm's reach beyond its fixed store locations. For the current rules on buying and selling raw milk statewide, see Utah's raw milk laws.
