On March 11, 2025, the administration and Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) slashed over $1 billion in funding for local food programs, including:
- $660 million cut to the Local Food for Schools program
- $420 million cut to the Local Food Purchase Assistance program
These cuts hurt local farmers and make it harder for schools and food banks to access fresh, local produce.
Fans of the current administration are pulling the wool over their eyes, making elephants out of flies in discussing oddball foreign aid projects that represent a minuscule part of the federal budget – all to distract from cuts that harm the country with no plans of bridging the gap. The consequences to local food systems are clear and destructive.
It’s never been a better time to make sure you’re supporting your local food producers and their partners in retail and delivery services.
