Florida officials offer differing opinions on raw milk

Two officials in Florida offer differing opinions on raw milk, revealing an interesting contour of political directions in the state.

This has been generally framed as disagreement, that’s not really it. They’re both not particularly supporting while not condemning raw milk, which is only available through feed licensing ie “pet food” in Florida.

Official statements

Florida Surgeon General, Joseph A. Ladapo MD PhD, tweeted that he supports the right to choose raw milk and linked to a longer article on the Florida Health website.

Floridians have the freedom to make informed health choices. I support the decision to consume raw milk when sought for potential health benefits and protective factors. Be aware of your source and know the risks.

Florida Ag Commissioner, Wilton Simpson, encourages Floridians to choose pasteurized milk products.

“Florida’s pasteurized milk supply is safe, nutritious, and closely controlled from the farm to your local grocery store,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson. “There have been no reported illnesses from pasteurized milk products in Florida, so Floridians should continue to buy and enjoy nutritious and wholesome dairy products from Florida farmers.”

These statements are following Florida DOH names Keely Farms Dairy as source of outbreak, but never contacts them
