Legal Status & Regulations

The Azores (Açores) is an autonomous region of Portugal comprising nine volcanic islands in the mid-Atlantic, roughly 1,500 km west of Lisbon. As Portuguese territory and part of the European Union, Portuguese food safety law and EU Regulation (EC) No 853/2004 apply in full.

The Azores has one of the most notable dairy traditions in the Portuguese-speaking world, built on the archipelago's exceptionally fertile volcanic soils and mild Atlantic climate, which support year-round grass-fed cattle farming. São Miguel island is home to the largest dairy cooperative in Portugal (Uniqua/Unileite), and Faial's Queijo do Pico and São Jorge's Queijo São Jorge — a raw milk cheese with Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) since 1996 — are internationally recognized. Farm-direct raw milk sales occur within the same regulatory framework as mainland Portugal under EU Regulation (EC) No 853/2004.
