Legal Status & Regulations

The Faroe Islands (Færøerne / Føroyar) is an autonomous territory of Denmark located in the North Atlantic Ocean between Norway and Iceland. The islands have their own parliament (Løgting) and government and are not a member of the European Union, meaning EU food safety regulations including EU Regulation (EC) No 853/2004 do not apply.

The Faroe Islands has a traditional pastoral culture centered on sheep farming, with sheep dairy — particularly sheep milk cheese — being part of the local food heritage. Raw milk consumption occurs in the traditional farm context. Food safety oversight falls under the Faroese Food and Veterinary Authority (Matvørulegi- og Dýralæknastovan), which operates its own regulatory framework independent of Danish national and EU standards. No formal consumer raw milk authorization framework is publicly documented; traditional farm-direct consumption is the established norm.
