Legal Status & Regulations

Mayotte is an overseas department of France in the Indian Ocean, between Madagascar and the northeastern coast of Mozambique. Since becoming a full overseas department in 2011, French law applies, including food safety regulations governing raw milk.

Raw milk is legal for sale via farm gate, vending machines, and retail shops under the Arrêté du 13 juillet 2012 relatif aux conditions de production et de mise sur le marché des laits crus. Local dairy production in Mayotte is minimal; most dairy is imported. Access to raw milk follows the same prefectural authorization framework as metropolitan France.
