Raw milk (Rohmilch) is sold across Austria at farms, from self-service milk vending machines (Milchautomaten) and through retail shops. Machines are common in rural areas and alpine villages, often beside farm shops selling eggs, cheese and produce. The rules are set by the federal Raw Milk Ordinance (Rohmilchverordnung, BGBl. II Nr. 106/2006).
Yes. Under Section 2 of the Rohmilchverordnung, raw milk and raw cream may be supplied directly by the animal keeper to the consumer, or to retail businesses that sell them directly to the consumer.
Section 3 allows raw milk to be sold from a milk vending machine tested against recognized criteria, provided the machine and its location do not impair the milk's hygiene. A 2020 factsheet from the federal health ministry sets out good practice: milk kept at 6°C or below with the temperature shown on the outside of the machine, a stirrer to stop the cream separating, a lockable tank, and cleaning and disinfection at least daily. Machines may sell raw or pasteurized milk, and the raw milk notice is posted beside them.
