Legal Status & Regulations

Serbia operates a two-tier framework for small-scale dairy plant (SSDP) operations overseen by the Serbian Veterinary Directorate. "Registered" SSDPs may handle up to 200 litres of milk per week from their own farm and sell at the farm gate, local green markets, and local retail outlets. "Approved" SSDPs are authorized to process up to 5,000 litres per week from their own or neighboring farms and may sell throughout Serbia.

Raw milk is sold alongside traditional dairy products such as cheese and kajmak at open markets. Producers must register or obtain approval from the Veterinary Directorate and meet applicable hygiene standards. Serbia is aligned with EU food safety standards as part of its EU accession process.
